Psychiatry - Conventional & Integrative
"Even if we don't have the power to choose where we come from, we can still choose where we go from there." - Stephen Chbosky
Psychiatry is the medical specialty devoted to the treatment of mental, behavioral, and emotional disorders. Psychiatrists commonly prescribe medication when mental health issues cause significant impairment in a person’s ability to work, love, care for themselves, or enjoy life. At Onea, we believe psychiatric medications can be especially helpful for stabilizing acute mental health conditions and providing a sense of safety and solidity when the mind becomes harmful or destructive.
Interestingly, the word ‘psychiatry’ in ancient Greek literally means 'medical treatment or healing of the soul*’, however most psychiatric practice today reduces people to symptoms rather than addressing the whole person or the root causes of mental illness. Integrative psychiatry was thus developed to take your whole body-mind system into account when treating mental health issues. Integrative psychiatry offers more treatment options and a more personalized approach than conventional psychiatry, without losing the scientifically-informed wisdom of modern medicine. At Onea, we believe that medications, supplements, botanicals, and nutraceuticals are just a few helpful tools in addition to diet, exercise, sleep, mindfulness, relationships, and personal meaning.
*Soul (psyche) — originally refers to a living, breathing, conscious body, rather than to an immortal soul. It is the animating principle of life, the source of life and consciousness. A person’s emotional nature or sense of identity; the personality as the center of emotions, desires, and affections.
